Hi, I’m Emily Bennewies
How I found running & coaching
I was a very mediocre athlete
During my childhood, I played soccer for 6 years but was never very good or very passionate about the sport. At the time, I hated the idea of running, and was terrified of getting hit with the ball. I also swam competitively, and chose to pursue this sport over soccer. I was on multiple teams for 10 years, and while I loved the sport, I was very average. When I got to college, I dropped my relationship with organized sports entirely.
I started running near the end of college
I worked out throughout college, mostly on the elliptical and occasionally in the pool. Fortunately, BU had a great gym. But when I studied abroad in Madrid my senior year, I had no access to a gym and still wanted to find a way to sweat. This was when I picked up running, lacing up every few days to explore the city and get a chance to work out. I didn’t know what I was doing, and definitely didn’t have the right shoes or clothing, but the fire was lit.
I met a guy who loved to run, and fell in love (with him and with running)
When I got back from Spain, I ended up meeting my husband, Derek. He was an avid runner, having done cross country in high school and continuing to run for fun in college. He taught me how to run indoors without holding on to the treadmill, how to slowly increase mileage, and where to get a proper pair of running shoes. The year after I graduated, he helped me train for my first half marathon and ran the entirety of the race with me. I finished stronger than I expected, and got my very first runner’s high.
The rest is history
Since that first half marathon in 2013, I’ve continued to run competitively. I’ve run countless 5ks, 10ks, and halves, and six marathons. I joined a local run club, the Heartbreakers, to become more embedded in the Boston running community. I’ve developed a love of the sport that is unparalleled to any other activity that I’ve tried.
I ran my fourth marathon with a goal of qualifying for the 2020 Boston Marathon. I was born and raised in Boston, and grew up watching the marathon on Patriot’s Day. I now had a newfound appreciation for the race and made it a goal to toe the line at some point in my life. I hired a running coach to pursue this goal, and it was a life-changing experience for me. Working with my coach has brought me to new levels in my running, and has allowed me to tap into a potential I never knew I had. And yes, I qualified for Boston!
This is why I want to coach you!
I’m passionate about running and about helping people unlock their running potential - whether you’re brand new to running or you’re training for your fifth marathon.
